Residents of Antigua and Barbuda are being advised to prepare for potentially disruptive and hazardous weather conditions this afternoon and evening as a tropical wave moves across the area.

Climatologist Dale Destin said the tropical wave is expected to generate showers and thunderstorms, with rainfall accumulations ranging from 3 to 12 millimetres (0.12 to 0.5 inches).

Destin warned that while rainfall totals are not expected to be excessive, thunderstorms could produce periods of heavy downpours, gusty winds, and dangerous lightning, which may lead to localized disruptions.

Destin noted that conditions are expected to improve by tomorrow as the tropical wave moves out of the area. Forecasts indicate only a 30 per cent, or low, chance of showers on Sunday, with easterly winds of 12 to 18 mph and occasional gusts reaching up to 28 mph.

Residents are encouraged to remain weather-aware, secure loose outdoor items, and exercise caution during periods of thunderstorms.

“Happy weekend,” Destine added, noting that more settled conditions are expected once the tropical wave departs the region.
